Know your options

Confirm the fixture layout before rough-in

The location of a shower base, sink or appliance affects the drain connection. Bring product details and layout dimensions into the discussion early. A late move can require changes to piping under a floor or behind finished surfaces.

Allow for future cleaning and maintenance

An installation should account for how the drain will be reached if service is needed later. Cabinets, finished floors and equipment can limit that access. Confirm fixture specifications and the surrounding construction before rough-in, and raise layout changes early. Moving a connection late in a remodel may involve more than shifting the visible trap.

A question worth asking

Can a drain be moved after tile or flooring is installed?

It may be possible, but access can require removing finishes. Planning the drain before installation of those surfaces usually makes the scope easier to coordinate. We explain the plumbing access needed for the proposed location.
